“The Megaphone for Expressing Your Dreams to the World”, The Land With No Name

This interactive piece by artist Dame Lewis, is one of the many sculptures on the sprawling grounds of the Land With No Name Sanctuary in the high desert grasslands outside of Tucson, Arizona. The image was taken with my plastic medium format Holga film camera in the fall of 2016 and printed for “Place”, a group exhibition at Burlington, Vermont’s Penny Cluse Café in 2022. It was my second visit to this enveloping and richly inspiring place, this time to celebrate the marriage of my dear friends, artists Kate Hodges and Ted Springer. Kate and Ted created this unique destination for art and education in 2011.

The Land With No Name provides a home for sculpture to live on the land, instead of within a gallery. The sculptures are ever-changing, evolving with the interaction of nature’s elements over time. Kate & Ted share the stories of over 45 different artists' work on guided tours. LWNN is a registered non-profit that also offers workshops, artist residencies, and retreats, and welcomes support in a variety of ways. Kate Hodges & Ted Springer

Kate Long Hodges is a multimedia artist whose work includes energetic drawings, textiles, mural paintings, and tree trunk sculptures. Her recent performance piece, “Thorn Blizzard” explores memories of growing up on her family farm.

Ted Wade Springer is a sculptor who engages with a variety of materials including steel, stone, and wood, as well as found objects. Ted is deeply committed to supporting fellow artists and stewarding their work on the land.

My Mother’s Things, Contact Triptych #1

The Art Hop is one of Burlington, Vermont’s most exciting events, when the entire southern swathe of town, which is filled with artist’s studios, explodes with exhibitions and events of all kinds. There will be happenings throughout the weekend (9/6-9/8), but the largest day is Friday evening.

I will have 2 new “Contact Triptychs” on display at Burlington City Arts Studios, at 405 Pine Street, where I teach summer camps in darkroom photography. The building will be open to the public on Friday, 5-8pm, and Saturday, 10am-1pm.

After Art Hop, the BCA Studios may be accessed M-F, 9am-5pm. The exhibition will run through October 27, 2024.

Gavin’s Walls Triptych

My piece above, was created for the upcoming Museum of Everyday Life exhibition, which assesses every conceivable aspect of life’s residues. “Gavin’s Walls Triptych” is a 3-print look at my younger brother’s Queens apartment after his fatal heart attack in 2017. The darkened walls speak of the 20 years of cigarette and marijuana smoke that had left impressions of the posters and Nascar memorabilia that had decorated his home.
