Thanksgiving week afforded me time to catch up on some of my projects. In three sessions, I produced 45 analog prints of 11 different images, in addition to editing and printing several new Contact Grids. As usual, the first darkroom session was a warm up, where I shook off the rust. Then, the following round is when things got rolling. Though it was productive, the week passed quickly and I had to put away my negatives and photo paper until the next opportunity.

Recently, when meeting with a friend who’s house I was visiting for the first time, I was heartened to see a framed liquid emulsion print I had made in 2003. On Sunday, November 19, I attended the Vermont Studio Center’s Vermont Artists Week Open House, and was impressed, as usual, with the creative energy that breathes through those time honored halls and spaces.

It is truly inspiring to engage with the various forms of expression and with the sense of camaraderie that Studio Center supports. The essence of creative generation feels particularly uplifting in this time of darkness and violence.

The work of printmaker Nathanael Kooperkamp stood out for me. His large, richly layered direct-to-plate photogravure prints in ink evoke the ephemeral experiences of memory and dreams. Kudos!

IN THE VIEWFINDER…

In two weeks, my teaching semester will conclude. A month’s break will find me spreading back into the darkroom. I’ll hand coat cotton watercolor paper with liquid (silver gelatin) emulsion and print images from photographs of my parents as children, as part of my continuing series, “(Re)membering”. This time, it’s personal! I am also excited to shoot for and produce a new batch of Contact Grids.

My next newsletter will be in early January.
