The earth is re-emerging after a particularly cold and snowy winter. Birds have arrived and hints of spring are in the air. My spirit lifts with the growing light.

My Father’s Things, Kodak Film Cans

I am printing single frames from rolls of objects from my father’s house and studio. There are hundreds of images that have so far only been used in combinations for my series of Contact Grids. It’s a pleasure to assess them again as individual images, and to get back into the darkroom. I love photographs that refer to photography, as with the Kodak film cans, above.

My property in Bristol is finally cleared of all the structures and overgrowth. Patches of ice have ebbed, the soil is beginning to thaw, and little white flowers called snowdrops are popping up in the front yard. I am designing my home for this quiet lane by the river, and hope to begin construction in early summer.

I have a growing collection of darkroom prints from the rolls of black-and-white film that I shot before, during, and after the transformation of the property. The images are a testament to the mournful beauty of the neglected homes and the sprawling piles.

For the one year anniversary of the total solar eclipse, two curators in conjunction with Burlington City Arts are assembling an exhibition of art created in response to the epic event, to be held at Burlington’s Contois Auditorium in early April. Below, is the photograph I submitted for consideration.

Eclipse Garden, My Father at 27

During the magnificent celestial alignment, I created a nest in my garden where I placed family pictures. As the obscuring of the sun progressed, I filtered the light through the holes of a kitchen colander, which became apertures projecting images of the sky. A framed photograph of my young father is covered in tiny eclipses, his edge-lit face in profile—an eclipse of its own. My 86 year old dad had died nine months earlier.

I am pleased to report that 3 of my photographs have been selected to be published in this year’s Onion River Review, the Saint Michael’s College annual literary and arts journal.

The Holga Contact Quad, below, is one of the accepted images for the 2025 edition, which will be released on April 4.

I am steadily developing a series of “Holga Contact Quads,” from contact sheets of rolls shot with my plastic medium format Holga camera.

SPOTLIGHT: Fiona Small

Fiona is a creative of many stripes, who works with watercolor, collage, mixed media, photography, video, and graphic design. She’s also a performance artist, a singer, a dancer, and a clown. To see her expressive work, visit FionaSmallStudio.com.

For the past 2 years, Fiona has helped me immensely with my website, with social media, in organising my many boxes of prints, and in creating videos. She has been patient, professional, and a delight to collaborate with. Fiona has become a dear friend, and I am sad to be saying goodbye, as she departs Vermont to pursue her creative explorations on the west coast. With gratitude, I wish her all the best, and look forward to working together from afar.

The opening of the multi-artist exhibition on Feb 7 brought out a vivacious crowd on a winter’s night, to soak in the varied art and dj beats.

I will submit a piece, to be determined, for next month’s annual S.P.A.C.E. Gallery Member’s Show–which opens of April 24, with a reception on Friday, May 2.

IN THE VIEWFINDER

A couple of exciting exhibition opportunities have arisen for the fall…I’ll have details in the next newsletter! I’ve also learned that my artist spotlight in Black & White Magazine will be featured in this October’s issue, portfolio to be determined.

I’m looking forward to working at Basin St. in the months ahead to create a home. The property has changed enormously since I first saw it last year, and there’s plenty to go.
